New Caledonia at the crossroads

When French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited Australia, the Australian government welcomed France as a stable partner in the Pacific region. Much of this stability relies upon the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, which will hold a referendum on self-determination in November this year.

2018 Lowy Lecture and Dinner: Sir Frank Lowy AC

On the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the establishment of the Lowy Institute, the Institute's board has invited Sir Frank Lowy AC to deliver this year’s Lowy Lecture and Dinner. The annual Lowy Lecture is the Lowy Institute’s flagship event, at which a prominent individual reflects on Australia and the world.

2017 Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue

The Lowy Institute hosted the fifth annual Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue from 12 to 15 December 2017 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The Dialogue is the flagship event of the Australia–Papua New Guinea Network, an initiative the Lowy Institute runs with the support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to expand the people-to-people links between Australia and PNG.

On 1–2 December 2015, the Lowy Institute hosted the third annual Australia-Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue. The Dialogue is the flagship event of the Australia-Papua New Guinea Network, an initiative designed to expand people-to-people relations between Australia and Papua New Guinea. This project reflects the significance of the Australia-Papua New Guinea relationship, especially in this, the 40th anniversary of independence year.

2013 Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue

The inaugural Australia-Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue was held at the Lowy Institute, Sydney on 26 November 2013. The Dialogue was an initiative that arose from the 2012 Papua New Guinea-Australia Ministerial Forum with twenty-two emerging leaders from Papua New Guinea and Australia, from across the business, government, media and non-government sectors participating.

Expressions of Interest – Tradelinked Cairns and PNG – Business Delegations

Since 1984, the cities of Lae and Cairns have been affiliated as sister cities. This affiliation contributes to strengthening the friendship between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and in particular our two regions. In October 2017 a Cairns business delegation was greatly welcomed by the Honourable Member for Lae, John Rosso MP; the Lae Chamber of Commerce and the Consul-General Lae, Mr Paul Murphy.

2018 Australia-Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue

The Dialogue brings together ten Papua New Guinean and ten Australian young people who are leaders in their fields, for two days of networking and discussion of priority issues for each country and the bilateral relationship. In 2018, PNG is on the international stage as host of the APEC summit. The Emerging Leaders Dialogue will build on this significant event to focus discussions on the potential for tourism and travel to strengthen links between Australia and PNG.

Connecting Papua New Guinea and Australia through the Arts

This workshop brought together 20 participants from different areas within the arts in both countries to explore the potential for greater connection and co-operation, in terms of the creation and showing of art and participation in cultural activities, but also to support artists and arts bodies with administration and management to make a career in the arts a viable economic choice. Participants also discussed maintaining Indigenous cultural practice and encouraging broader engagement with the Indigenous cultures of PNG and Australia through the arts. The workshop concluded with a public reception and showing of the PNG-Australia film and music collaboration a Bit na Ta.

Aus-PNG Network Social Evening – Melbourne

We’re hosting a panel with three experienced Pacific journalists – Caroline Tiriman, Mary-Louise O’Callaghan and Catherine Graue – on the challenges and opportunities of covering news in Australia’s nearest neighbour. We’ll be talking about how technology is changing the way Papua New Guinea gets its news and how Australians can better engage with emerging issues in PNG.
