The Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University invites you to The Griffith Asia Lecture 2019 Presented by Dame Meg Taylor, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum

The Griffith Asia Lecture 2019 Presented by Dame Meg Taylor, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum  Meg Taylor is a national of Papua New Guinea. In 2014, she was appointed by Pacific Islands Forum Leaders as Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum becoming the first woman to hold this position. Under her leadership, the Pacific Islands Forum has revitalized its approach to regionalism through the Framework for Pacific Regionalism and as a collective entity, under the Blue Pacific identity. A lawyer by training, she began her professional life as Private Secretary to Chief Minister Michael Somare during self-government of Papua New Guinea, and at the beginning of his tenure as Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. Prior to her appointment as Secretary General, Dame Meg was appointed Vice President to establish the Office of the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) of the World Bank Group in 1999. Under her leadership, CAO has become internationally known for its cutting-edge work in addressing corporate-community conflict around the globe - a model that has been replicated by other multilateral institutions. Dame Meg has also served as Ambassador of Papua New Guinea to the United States, Mexico and Canada. She has been recognised by her Government for her exemplary public service in 2002 and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. As Secretary General, Dame Meg, who also holds the role of Pacific Ocean Commissioner, is working alongside Forum Leaders, to secure the future the Blue Pacific continent based on inclusion, collectivism and the need for careful guardianship of our ocean, lands, cultures and resources.
