Natural Resource Governance in Papua New Guinea panel discussion
Natural Resource Governance in Papua New Guinea panel discussion

In an area of biodiversity loss and climate change, Papua New Guinea is part of the third largest contiguous rainforest on the planet and a place of breathtaking natural endowment. In PNG itself, debates continue to rage about the best path to development for its people.

Speakers

  • Emmanuel Peni, Coordinator, Project Sepik
  • Fleur Ramsay, Pasifika Programs Manager, Environmental Defenders’ Office
  • Alice Cope, Director and Chief of Operations, Pillar Two

The speakers explored questions such as:

  • How can development be pursued in a way that does not destroy the rich legacy bequeathed to its people?
  • What is the responsibility of state and corporate actors who are planning new projects in PNG?
  • Can Melanesian laws and practices inform approaches to protecting and preserving PNG’s natural resource wealth?

The discussion was followed by a Q&A, moderated by Luke Fletcher, Executive Director of Jubilee Australia.

Presented by the Aus-PNG Network and Jubilee Australia

Event recorded on 8 August 2022.
